This project to fit out – or rather, refurbish – a living area in a house in Châtel-Saint-Denis, near Lausanne, is a wonderful example of the sort of commission that we love. A lovely floor area of around 60m², already occupied by a kitchen, a beautiful dining table and a lounge area with sofas. The only drawback: this completely open-plan space lacked any clear demarcations to define the different zones. Mission accomplished for BeHome Interiors Lausanne.
Current situation
When we met this young couple and their two children at their home near Lausanne, we discovered this large open-plan room combining the kitchen, dining room and living room into a spacious area. The existing kitchen is beautifully crafted, and the furniture is of high quality (table, benches, sofas). A modern suspended fireplace adds a lovely touch of originality to the space. The décor is bold, but the beautiful concrete wall feels a little bare. A lot of floor space is underused or even wasted.

A number of design ideas for a room where you can live (more comfortably)
Because several proposals are better than just one and demonstrate that, for a single room, there are numerous design possibilities. Taking into account the existing layout and, above all, the client’s wishes, our interior designers are committed to surprising them. Different styles, various layouts and a range of bespoke furniture designs enable the client to easily visualise their future home.
Defining spaces without separating them
The client’s wish, in this large, completely open-plan living area, was to retain that lovely sense of openness whilst clearly defining the three areas: kitchen, lounge and dining room. This bespoke screen, crafted from solid oak with a natural oil finish, serves to divide the space whilst also providing a place to display indoor plants. The low unit features spacious drawers used to store numerous board games.
A wall clad in timber panelling
Also crafted from solid oak with a natural oil finish, this wall cladding complements the trellis to create a beautiful, warm and harmonious aesthetic. Decorative items are displayed on horizontal shelves made from the same wood. A bespoke sideboard, designed to store crockery near the table, features the same colour as the base unit of the trellis.
A cosier living space
This large open-plan space, now defined by furniture and by colour and material accents on its walls, has become warmer and more comfortable. The three areas are more clearly defined. You move from one space to another without going through any doors, yet with the impression of changing atmosphere. Solid partitions would have robbed the space of its lovely natural light.
A cosy atmosphere in the living room
The large concrete wall, which looks very stylish in this modern home but used to feel a bit bare and cold, has been given a warmer feel with a few oak shelves, on which the paintings now seem less out of place. The sofas and coffee table have been returned to their original places, as part of a warmer and more cohesive redesign, free from the mismatched furniture of the past.
Ultra-chic finish and recessed handles
If you’re looking for a sleek, modern design, the height of chic is to do away with handles on the drawers. The recessed grip moulded directly into the door is a very attractive feature. The base unit beneath the screen and the sideboard have been crafted using this same ingenious system.
