This project to convert the loft of a house near Lausanne is a perfect example of a well-thought-out approach to optimising a medium-sized floor area situated beneath a very steep and asymmetrical roof pitch. How can you maximise storage space without wasting too much room, whilst ensuring the space remains pleasant? How can we make every member of the family want to spend time there for their leisure activities? Creating this (truly) liveable space was a wonderful, bespoke challenge for BeHome Interiors Lausanne.
A ‘state-of-the-art’ loft conversion
It is actually a landing at the top of a flight of stairs that the client didn’t know what to do with. With its impressive ceiling height of nearly 3 metres at the top, the top floor of this house certainly offered undeniable potential. As it was a necessary passageway to access rooms on either side, turning this vacant space into a bedroom was out of the question. Turning it solely into a storage room would have been a real shame, but cupboards were needed. So, a study? A reading nook? A library? A cosy corner? A walk-in wardrobe? And why not all of these at once?

Bespoke furniture at its best
If the roof is asymmetrical, you might as well turn it into an asset. On either side of the door, a deep, bespoke unit – comprising doors, drawers, shelves and recesses – makes quite an impression on visitors. The off-white and blue chosen for the fronts provide a lovely contrast to the warm wood of the panelling on the sloping ceiling. A perpendicular bookcase, made of solid wood and positioned next to a desk, creates a clever balance and adds perspective and depth.
Plenty of storage options
Behind these numerous doors lie impressive amounts of storage space. A bespoke walk-in wardrobe, a coat room, cupboards, shelves, shelving units and drawers of varying sizes. The interplay of shapes and sizes across all these storage solutions lends this loft an unbeatable sense of dynamism and originality. The wooden accents of the bookcase and the horizontal surfaces add a subtle warmth.
A cosy little office nook
Large enough to carry out all sorts of tasks, a home office allows you to retreat for as long as you need to find inspiration or sort out paperwork. Tucked away between a bookcase, sloping-ceiling cupboards with storage and shelves, this attic office also has everything you need for working from home. It would be a real shame not to make the most of it.
A well-designed reading corner
A coffee table, a rug, a few chairs and armchairs, and that’s it? But that’s not taking into account the overall atmosphere of the room. The sloping, panelled ceiling creates the illusion of a child’s treehouse. The overall design, with its large pieces of furniture filled with books and comics, bathed in natural light, exudes a sense of serenity and makes you want to open a book and lose yourself in it for hours on end. The chairs and armchairs with their patchwork finishes are so visually inviting and genuinely comfortable that you just want to curl up in them. It’s the finishing touch that has delighted our clients and confirmed they made the right choice in hiring an interior designer in Lausanne.
