This bookcase, created by our BeHome Interiors team in a loft converted from a former workshop in Geneva, is one of our finest creations. An ambitious, highly technical project commissioned by a client with a passion for books. Measuring 4 metres high by 4 metres wide, this bespoke piece of furniture borders on the extravagant. But when a client entrusts us with a project like this, we can’t help but be delighted and let our creativity run wild. Let us tell you the story of this bespoke bookcase in words and pictures…
A large-scale library in Geneva
In this flat in the Plainpalais district of Geneva, the ceiling height is 4 metres. It makes sense to make the most of all this wall space to house and organise one’s book collection in a bespoke bookcase, complementing it with a beautiful black ladder that matches the overall design. Hundreds of books, of varying sizes, covering 16m² of wall space! Novels, art books, comic books. All the more reason to create recesses that will showcase this wide variety of formats and highlight the scale of this collection. For the metal framework, we’ve commissioned a metalwork artisan.

A majestic bookcase in Geneva
Its sheer scale is dizzying. Yet its grandeur is matched only by its elegance and refinement. Its sturdy matt black metal frame, crafted by our partner, allows for creative freedom in the design of the light-coloured wooden sections (maple veneer). It is now ready to house a truly impressive collection of books.
A bookcase worthy of the name
Once filled with all the books, the bespoke unit really comes into its own and looks even more beautiful. The bookcase features compartments that are sometimes open at the sides and sometimes closed at the back. The lightweight unit can be moved easily from left to right thanks to its discreet castors.
Books in the Spotlight
This bespoke cathedral-style bookcase is like a sanctuary for all these beautiful books. To highlight certain items in the collection, small LED spotlights are discreetly recessed into some of the niches, and a remote control allows you to adjust their brightness. Once lit up, the bookcase looks simply divine, doesn’t it?
A bit of storage too
The lower section consists of closed units that open with a simple push, offering generous storage space. The white fronts have a matt finish that allows the main part of the unit to take centre stage. The clever design of the ladder means it doesn’t need a rail and can remain upright so as not to obstruct the passageway.
