Remote working (whether flexible, hybrid or fully remote) has become the norm in the post-Covid world of work.

You’ve probably given it a go and perhaps you’re keen to continue working from home? In that case, you’re no doubt thinking about clearly defining your workspace within your home or simply improving your current office set-up to be more productive.

Are you properly equipped for working from home? In this article, you’ll find some tips to help you improve your home office space.

Finding the perfect place to set up your office

Fewer commutes, greater flexibility – working from home is all the rage. Now more than ever, a home office has become a must-have in both houses and flats. How do you choose the best place to set one up?

Ideally, you should set up your home office in a quiet, bright and pleasant room. If you have a large room set aside for this purpose, you’ll be able to fit out your office with bespoke storage solutions. If not, you can create one by marking out a dedicated office area. To do this, using partitions such as lattice screens can be a good way to create a separate workspace.

Working in a cool environment is just as important for helping you to concentrate. And why not take this opportunity to adopt an eco-friendly approach by making the most of natural cooling?

Defining your workspace

This is probably the simplest and most obvious piece of advice, but it is absolutely essential. You cannot create an inspiring workspace if you do not have a dedicated place to work.

To ensure you can make steady progress on your work, avoid sitting in a place where you are likely to be interrupted by other family members. We also advise against places such as the bedroom, which is not recommended for working as it is associated with rest and relaxation.

Similarly, avoid noisy places such as the kitchen or the dining room. There’s a good chance you’ll be disturbed by outside noises as well as by other members of the family.

In short, our advice is to choose a quiet and secluded spot:

  • A well-insulated room in the house (if possible),
  • A place where you’ll be the only guest,
  • A place where you won’t be disturbed and where you can stay focused.

If your office is in your living room, that’s great, but try to create separate areas for each activity if possible.

Office equipment tailored to your needs

Choosing the right office equipment is very important, as it reflects your working style and personality, not to mention comfort. It should ensure you are comfortable and, above all, help you to be more productive.

The elements that form the basis of an office space are:

  • A good armchair,
  • An ergonomic keyboard and mouse mat,
  • A phone, earphones or a headset – ideal for video calls and other meetings.

If you’d like a unique office, a bespoke design is a great option. That way, you can create the workspace you’ve always dreamed of.

Why not choose the eco-friendly option by giving furniture and/or objects a new lease of life? By customising old furniture, you can be sure of having pieces that are truly one of a kind.

Also, make sure you don’t have any unnecessary items in your home office. It’s easy for supplies to pile up, but getting rid of them helps to declutter your workspace (and clear your mind at the same time!) whilst creating a sense of tidiness and organisation.

Too many accessories can also create the impression that you need a larger workspace. Consider rearranging your furniture and try out different layouts to see if you can make the most of the space you have.

Decorate and add your own personal touch

Decorating your office nicely also helps you to make the space your own and feel at home there.

Make sure your office is well lit. Firstly, to help you work better and for longer, but also for your visual comfort. If your office is too dark or too bright, you may experience eye strain. Light comes from two sources: the sun and lamps. Ideally, you should aim for balanced lighting and choose energy-saving bulbs that do not strain your eyes, use less energy and last longer.

You can adopt techniques that will help you work more effectively in line with your goals. For example, if you find yourself working long hours on your computer or mobile phone, it may be a good idea to switch them off or unplug them when you’re not working.

You can also check your computer’s settings to adjust the monitor’s brightness: in a room that is too dark, your face will be more exposed to glare from the monitor and sunlight.

A few extra tips 🙂

Avoid interruptions and distractions that slow you down and prevent you from achieving your goals. To be more productive and creative, it’s important to stay focused on what you’re doing. To do this, you can use various apps to block out irrelevant information. These apps help you stay focused on your main task. They stop you from checking social media or your email.

Make sure you also take regular breaks to catch your breath. It’s a good idea to take breaks to relax and unwind. You could go for a coffee or take a short walk. This will help you refocus and get back to your main task. Ideally, you should take a break every two hours, as soon as you feel your concentration starting to slip.

In conclusion

Working from home is becoming the norm. Organising your home workspace is therefore essential to ensure you can work in the best possible conditions: defining the space, choosing the right equipment, décor, accessories and tools are all factors it is important to take into account when setting up your home office.

Landscaping of a house entrance in Luxembourg

This project to redesign a house entrance in Luxembourg, carried out by BeHome Interiors, was intended to give this spacious entrance hall a sense of character. The entrance hall, which is often given little or no thought at all, ends up being cobbled together with mismatched furniture and becomes the opposite of a warm and welcoming space. Our clients gave us free rein to make the most of this area, which acts as the hub for the whole house. Here is what we devised and brought to life…
